The summer of smoke
December 4, 2025
The wildfire smoke in the summer of 2017 left daily life in Kamloops feeling hazy and unhealthy. With nearly one-fifth of the summer spent under heavy smoke, we had to stay indoors more, avoid outdoor work and recreation, and dealt with irritated eyes, coughing, and breathing difficulties. We were fortunate enough to have a home with cool, clean indoor air. The extreme Air Quality Health Index left vulnerable residents feeling especially stressed, and many experienced disrupted routines, poorer well-being, and a constant sense of being trapped by the smoke.
