Puffin population
May 21, 2025
I took this picture of Puffins on my trip to Iceland in 2024. Puffins have faced dramatic population declines, up to 70% in some areas, largely due to climate change. Rising ocean temperatures have disrupted their food supply, particularly sand eels, which are a crucial part of their diet. As waters warm, these small fish move north or decline in number, leaving puffins struggling to find enough food to raise their chicks. Extreme weather events and habitat loss also contribute to their decline, making it harder for puffins to nest and survive. This makes me think about BC's coastal birds and how climate change is affecting them here too.
