I came across a field of flooded farmland when I was driving on a highway, and this photo of waterlogged farmland highlights the growing impact of extreme weather on agriculture. I was really shocked by how much rain Vancouver received over the break, and this made me think about how climate change could be causing more drastic changes in weather patterns. Due to the impacts of climate change, excessive rainfall and more violent weather are becoming common occurrences that overwhelm natural and artificial drainage systems and leave fields, infrastructure, and roads unusable. Witnessing this firsthand gave me a deeper appreciation for how climate change doesn’t just exist in scientific reports; it’s already affecting daily life.
