Growing up in Vancouver, I remember that winters were colder and we always had snow. I can't remember a winter without snow. Winters were often very foggy too, due to all the coal being burned. Sometimes it was so thick you couldn't see across the street! As a boy in the 1940's, we used to play hockey on the local ponds around Trafalgar school, which used to be more of a marsh with small ponds back then that froze in winter. We also used to skate at Beaver Lake in Stanley Park, even into the 1960s. People would bring their own skates and we could easily access the lake from the trail. The lake was larger then. Sometimes we would also skate at Lost Lagoon, though the ice was thinner there.
