Kitsilano Beach – recreational water quality
May 20, 2025
While I missed a picture of the pool, the beaches in this area (Kitsilano, Jericho, English Bay) are notorious for E. Coli-related closures each year. I remember thinking to myself years ago, how silly it was that there is a pool right next to the ocean. Today, I understand that natural water bodies may become more dangerous to swim in because of rising temperatures coupled with human activity. These factors increase the likelihood of bacteria or harmful algae blooms, which exacerbates public health risks. I believe recreational water quality – especially in natural spaces such as beaches and lakes – is closely related to health equity. When these spaces become unsafe, it disproportionately impacts certain populations who cannot afford private pools or access cleaner, more remote locations.
