Well this doesn’t feel good….
July 29, 2026
I take a walk down to this fishing dock from my work to get a little exercise and clear my mind. But my mind is far from clear when I see the state of Somenos Marsh. Land use change and "nutrient" inputs to the wetland, as well as warmer temperatures, mean that the Marsh is impacted by harmful algae blooms every year, for most of the summer. Kayakers and rowers still use the spot, but you have to be careful getting in and out of the water. You don't see anybody fishing here in the summer anymore! The Marsh is also under pressure because of the de-encampment of unhoused people from North Cowichan, who had nowhere else to go but here. This complex system is under so many stressors.
