This photo was also taken off of the Sunshine Coast in the summer of 2024, as we kayaked around some small islands. Seals are a vital part of Vancouver Island's identity, and especially to the Indigenous populations. Seals are present in cultural traditions and are also seen as a symbol of transformation and a connection between the land and water. Many Indigenous communities view seals as a sacred creature and hold them in high regard in stories and ceremonies. Seals are also a historical resource for food and fur. Their meat is an important food for the peoples and pelts for warmth. Seals are being affected by climate change as changes in temperature, currents, and ecosystems are vastly affecting the fish populations which the seals rely on.
